Amy Akin

Ballet

Mrs. Akin holds a BA in Dance with from Brigham Young University where she received scholarships for theater and dance. Amy was also a Utah Sterling Scholar finalist in Drama. She performed with the Ricks College Contemporary Dance Team, and Ballroom Dance Team, teams, and Philharmonic Orchestra (violin). She has studied ballet with William F. Christensen, Bené Arnold, and Jillana Hess Webb at the Ballet West Conservatory, Salt Lake Dance Center. She was invited to perform student roles with Ballet West in "Cinderella," and “The Nutcracker.” Mrs. Akin performed with the Mountain West Ballet and Salt Lake Ballet Theater in productions of “Coppélia”, “The Twelve Dancing Princesses”, and “The Nutcracker” (Clara).

She founded the Melody Lane Ballet Company in Washington State where she and her husband owned and operated the Melody Lane Performing Arts Academy and founded the Akin Center Theatre. Before recently passing the school and theater down in 2018, the Akins produced over plays and musicals. Amy has choreographed over 20+ musicals and performed in many as an actress, singer and dancer. Some of her favorite roles include “Lily” (The Secret Garden), “Bakers Wife” (Into the Woods), and “Fairy” (The Curious Savage). Mrs. Akin choreographed and produced Central Washington’s first in-the-round staging of “The Nutcracker” at the Akin Center Theatre in 2012.

Mrs. Akin has been teaching ballet for nearly 30 years. In that time she has coached private students (San Francisco YAGP semi-finals) and produced and directed 40+ dance recitals. One of her specialties is teaching young people with special needs. Her greatest achievement as a teacher has been mentoring students who struggle with disabilities and watching them blossom and thrive through dance. Mrs. Akin teaches 4 th grade at American Preparatory Academy in UT where she and her husband, Tony, along with their four children, reside in South Jordan, UT.
