Joseph Cavanaugh

Ballet Intensive Guest Instructor

Joseph pursued his professional training at the Virginia School of the Arts, and later graduated with honors from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division. He has worked with and performed for such choreographers as José Garant, Dwight Rhoden, and Jordan Morris; most recently with Adam Houghland and Emery LeCrone. Since joining Ballet Arizona in 2001, Joseph has originated featured roles in Ib Andersen’s Elevations, Mosaik, 2B, Play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and in Interplays by Vladimir Angelov. He has danced soloist and principal roles in Swan Lake, Giselle (Hilarion), Twyla Tharp’s The Golden Section, Dwight Rhoden’s Ave Maria, and Jerome Robbins’s In the Night. Joseph’s Balanchine repertoire includes soloist roles in Agon, Serenade, and Stravinsky Violin Concerto; Andersen’s Romeo and Juliet (Tybalt), Amoroso, Indigo Rhapsody, and The Nutcracker. Among the many other works Joseph has performed are Bournonville’s Konservatoriet, Andersen’s Sueños, Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty, “Danse Bohème” from Carmen; and Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Theme and Variations, and “Rubies” (from Jewels). Joseph originated a role in Ib Andersen’s Diversions which he performed on the Kennedy Center stage in June 2010.
